JAKARTA Feb 25 (Reuters) - Japan's Yamaha Motor Co plans to build a new motorcycle factory near Jakarta for investment of 10 billion yen ($122.07 million) to meet growing demand, an Indonesian newspaper reported on Friday. Yamaha, the second biggest motorcycle seller in Indonesia, sold 276,586 units in January, when total industry sales rose 32 percent from the previous year, according to industry data.
The new factory will produce 300,000 motorcycles a year with the aim of making the firm compete with Indonesia's biggest motorcycle distributor Honda Astra Motor, a subsidiary of Honda , Bisnis Indonesia quoted Dyonisius Betty, the head of Yamaha's local unit, as saying.
The firm is able to produce 3.6 million motorcycles a year from three existing factories, Betty said.
Foreign direct investment is growing into Indonesia as firms eye an expanding consumer market, relatively cheap labour and political stability in Southeast Asia's biggest economy. Sales of cars and motorbikes have boomed.
The local unit of Japan's Daihatsu will invest 2.1 trillion rupiah ($237 million) to build a new factory producing low cost cars in Indonesia, the firm said this week. ($1 = 81.920 Yen) ($1 = 8870 Rupiah) (Reporting by Telly Nathalia; Editing by Neil Chatterjee)
YOU'RE going to have to get used to questions like, "Bro, is this a 400cc bike?" or "How can it be?" if you own a Yamaha FZ16.
It's a 153cc, four-stroke motorcycle riding on its bigger sibling's "celebrity" wave.
In looks, the small capacity FZ16 shares an uncanny resemblance to the Yamaha Fazer FZ1, a 1,000cc naked bike, with a loyal following for its brutish looks. Yamaha created a similar hype within the small bike fraternity before, with models like the YZF-R125 - a 125cc carbon copy of Yamaha's iconic 600cc sportsbike, the R6.
The FZ16, launched last month, may initially cause some confusion. Its unique headlight, large fuel tank, huge exhaust pipe and grab rails look like they came from the same assembly plant as the FZ1.
But up close, it's easy to spot the difference.
The air-cooled FZ16, assembled in India, has a single cylinder instead of four.
The drum brake at the FZ16's rear wheel, usually reserved for smaller cost-effective models, gives the game away.
The side panels, just below and aft the fuel tank, hide a carburettor, not a fuel injection system. As such, the electric start of the FZ16 requires a slight twist of the throttle to bring the engine to life.
Once purring, the motor works silently and is vibration-free.
You know you're in the next gear not from listening to the engine revs, but more likely from the pedalshifter sinking into the next cog.
While the five-speed FZ16 may try to look larger than life, in reality it's still a small motorbike punching out about 13.8HP and 14NM of torque.
This means you would need to keep the revs up if you want to keep the engine eager.
Not a problem, especially on Singapore roads where the expressway limit is 90kmh and the streets are dotted with traffic lights.
Keep the revs hovering at 6,000rpm on the digital rev counter and FZ16 cruises breathlessly.
With a top speed of 130kmh, the FZ16 will comply with most road duties.
If used merely for daily commute, the FZ16 will continue its journey for a long time, all thanks to its 12-litre tank.
We initially thought there was a fault with the compact digital dashboard.
After riding about 200km, the digital fuel gauge still had not reached its half-way mark.
It turns out that the FZ16 isn't a fuel-thirsty bike.
Yamaha revealed that on the expressway, the bike is capable of travelling about 50km on just a litre of fuel.
In the city, the figure stands at 45km.
This is great if you're on a budget.
What sets the FZ16 apart from other small capacity bikes are its pseudo bulk and tubeless tyres.
It may not look it, but it has a dry weight of 126kg - it's light.
Parking the FZ16 on its main stand is also effortless.
Just step (on the main stand) and swing.
Its choice of tyres also depart from the norm. Instead of narrow tyres, the FZ16's rubbers are wider.
Yamaha FZ16
Price: $4,300 Engine: Single cylinder, four-stroke Capacity: 153cc Power: 13.8HP
Although the FZ16 doesn't steer as quickly, there's added assurance knowing you now have a bigger contact patch with the road surface.
Brake-wise, the front disc and rear drum set-up are a decent combo.
You don't get the initial bite from the front brakes, the braking power is gained progressively - the more you depress the brake lever, the better it gets.
Stick to the speed limit and you won't get any surprises from its brakes or suspension.
Smaller bikes normally lack damping and are prone to bottoming out.
On the FZ16, its plush suspension keeps all but the deepest of potholes in check.
Nevertheless, you might tax its telescopic front and monocross suspension with a heavy pillion.
But when you're not riding two-up, the upright riding posture plus the wide handlebars give both rider and bike a mean attitude.
Just like it's bigger brother, the FZ1.

How to Adjust the Valves on My Yamaha Maxim Motorcycle
Adjust the valves on your Yamaha Maxim motorcycle while the engine is cold.
Jupiterimages/Photos.com/Getty Images
Your Yamaha Maxim motorcycle has eight valves: four intake valves and four exhaust valves. The intake valves for the front and rear cylinders are opposite each other at the gap between the cylinders at mid-engine. The exhaust valves are located at the outer corners of each cylinder. A cam chain operates the valves, and the chain must be properly adjusted before the valve clearances are set. Adjust the valves on your Yamaha Maxim motorcycle while the engine is cold.
Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
Things You'll Need:
Service manual
Spark plug wrench
Metric sockets and ratchet
Adjustable wrench
Feeler gauge
Screwdriver
Cam Chain
1
Park the motorcycle on the center stand or elevate the rear wheel off the floor using wood blocks under the lower frame tubes. Put the transmission in top gear.
2
Remove both spark plug wires by hand. Loosen and remove both spark plugs counterclockwise with a spark plug wrench or a deep socket and a ratchet.
3
Remove the cam chain adjustment cap on the back of the cylinders just below the carburetors, using an adjustable wrench. Look inside and identify the hollow adjuster stud with a hex head and lock nut. Notice the tip of a metal pin in the center of the hollow adjuster stud. This is the traveler pin that rides on the cam chain.
4
Rotate the rear wheel of the motorcycle forward by hand as you observe the tip of the traveler pin. It moves in and out as you rotate the rear wheel. The cam chain adjustment is correct when the pin moves the same distance each way.
5
Adjust the cam chain by loosening the lock nut at the base of the adjuster stud counterclockwise with a metric socket and a ratchet. Turn the adjuster stud clockwise or counterclockwise by hand as needed until the tip of the traveler pin moves equally each way you rotate the rear wheel forward. Tighten the lock nut clockwise once the cam chain is adjusted.
6
Thread the cam chain adjustment cap clockwise into place and tighten it with the adjustable wrench.
Valves
1
Remove the valve cover caps at the upper sides of the cylinders counterclockwise with the adjustable wrench.
2
Look inside the front opening at one side of the rear cylinder where a valve cap was removed. Notice the position of the rocker arm. The intake valve rocker arm must be fully up in order to adjust the intake valve. Rotate the rear wheel forward until the rocker arm is fully up and pauses for an instant before engaging again. Take the time to get this setting right.
3
Refer to your repair manual for valve clearance specifications, and select the appropriate feeler gauge. Insert the feeler gauge between the underside of the rocker arm and the top of the valve stem. The gauge should slide in and out with light resistance.
4
Adjust the valve by loosening the lock nut on the rocker arm stud with a metric socket and ratchet. Turn the rocker arm stud clockwise with a screwdriver if the clearance is loose, and counterclockwise if the clearance is tight. Tighten the rocker arm lock nut clockwise when the feeler gauge slides in and out with light resistance.
5
Repeat the valve adjustment procedure to adjust the remaining intake and exhaust valves. Make sure the rocker arm is fully up when you set that particular valve clearance. Tighten the lock nuts securely after each adjustment.
6
Thread the valve caps in place clockwise and tighten them with the adjustable wrench. Reinstall the spark plugs and tighten them clockwise with the plug wrench. Attach the plug wires to the spark plugs by hand.
HLI recently proposed an internal rationaliation exercise involving its Yamaha motorcycle operations in Malaysia (Click here for more information).
The assembly of Yamaha motorcycles is performed by Hong Leong Yamaha Motor Sdn Bhd (HLYM) and it currently assembles five moped models - Y100, Y110, SRE/SRX, SR-Lagenda, Y125Z; two street models - RXZ, TZM 150 ; and four leisure bike models namely - Majesty YP250, Virago 250, Virago 535 and DragStar XVS650 . Approximately 80% of motorcycles produced by HLYM are mopeds and the remainder street models and leisure bike models. The Yamaha motorcycles are principally for sale in the domestic market.
HLYM is one of the top four motorcycle assemblers/distributors in the country (via the Hong Leong Yamaha group of companies) with a current market share of approximately 17%.
HLYM also manufactures metal and plastic body parts internally, while the engines are purchased fully assembled from Hicom-Yamaha Manufacturing Malaysia Sdn Bhd, an associated company in which HLI has a 30 per cent shareholding. HLYM commenced manufacturing of the plastic body parts following the acquisition of the injection moulding business on 30 June 1999. Tyres are sourced locally while motorcycle wheel rims are imported from Indonesia. The component and raw materials for the manufacturing of metal and plastic body parts are mainly source locally.
The distribution of Yamaha motorcycles, parts and accessories in Malaysia, is solely undertaken by Hong Leong Yamaha Distributors Sdn Bhd (HLYD).
Distribution is presently undertaken through a nationwide network of dealers. Some of these sell only Yamaha motorcycles and parts. These shops are designed to project a strong brand image through the integration of sales showroom, service and sale of parts and accessories. Certain other dealers sell a number of different makes, but the Yamaha name is given priority and these outlets also act as Yamaha service centres providing after-sales support.
HLYD's marketing strategies include the organisation of customer-based activities and image-building programmes in the media, stressing performance, reliability, styling and high resale value to promote the Yamaha brand image. HLYD is also aiming to promote sales of motorcycles in the 250cc-plus category in order to enhance its market.
